What is computerised cognitive training & how can it help my child? Cognitive training consists of a variety of exercises designed to help improve functioning in areas such as sustaining attention, memory, visual and auditory processing, conceptual and logic skills etc. If child is having attentional or learning problems, tutoring or drill practice in academic areas may often not be effective. The principle underlying cognitive training is to help improve the "core" abilities and self-control necessary before an individual can function successfully academically. The exercises "drill for skill" directly in the areas where basic specific cognitive difficulties occur. This type of therapy has been shown to be highly effective when used as part of a multi-modal approach of treating a variety of cognitive problems (ADHD, traumatic brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis).
Here at the Sydney Cognitive Development Centre we offer both centre- based and home-based therapy depending on your needs. We offer standard cognitive training for the following problems:
Attention Skills
Executive Skills
Memory Skills
Visuospatial Skills
Problem Solving Skills
Communication Skills
Psychosocial Skills
We also offer a new technology called Edufeedback. Edufeedback technology is a NASA based technology, which teaches your child to control their attentive state in real time. The system features a special helmet with built-in sensors that non-invasively measure the brain waves associated with focus and cognitive processing. The brain waves are translated by an interface unit so your child can control educational video exercises through attention alone. Your child can then learn to maintain this focused awareness, and learn what behaviours detract from their focus as these behaviours occur. This has been shown to be effective in helping train attention skills in a variety of disorders including ADHD.
